Come noto, Irbarol studiò a fondo il riccio comune dell’Alta Pianura Padana.
In quello studio dedusse che v’era una certa corrispondenza matematica tra il numero degli aculei e l’età dell’animale. Si limitò, a causa della scarsità di tecnologie alla fine del secolo scorso, a trarre solo conclusioni sommarie rimanendo in perfetta linea col suo modo di operare scientifico. Stabilì infatti che il numero di aculei era approssimativamente “qualche dozzina” e che per ogni dozzina si poteva contare circa un mese di età. Semplicemente, un esemplare di 5 anni di età doveva contare 720 aculei circa. “Eh, si, ma contali tu 720 aculei su un riccio incazzato!” avrebbe affermato Irbarol.
Ah, quanto tempo risparmiato nella ricerca del 1998 e quanta precisione in più avrebbe potuto avere quella ricerca se Irbarol e il suo entourage avessero avuto a disposizione questo apparecchio di nuova progettazione! Il contatore di aculei, promosso e realizzato in prototipo dai membri del MIP*, è costituito da un micro robot a forma di ragno (circa 5 mm di diametro/ingombro) che viene rilasciato sulla cute del riccio. Questo micro robot, dotato di 6 arti come alcuni aracnidi monchi, telecomandato a distanza da un micro telecomando e dotato di una micro camera trasmette micro immagini su un micro schermo applicato ad un gigantesco personal computer.
L’operatore, seduto su uno sgabello altissimo in uno stabile dal soffitto molto basso, è quindi in grado di comandare il micro robot e contare dunque le radici di ogni aculeo sul micro schermo usando una grande lente di ingrandimento. Per non sbagliare e tornare a contare un aculeo già contato, il micro robot nebulizza un micro numero in colore rosso sulla base dell’aculeo. E così via fino a che non viene segnato l’ultimo aculeo.
Durante uno dei migliori test il conteggio arrivò a 699 aculei ma il robot andò a puttane perché avrebbe voluto fare conto tondo.
Il contatore di aculei sarà anche una applicazione per iPhone/iPad col nome di iCuulei.
